In the latest Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), the University of Minnesota School of Mathematics was ranked #11 in the world overall, #6 among US universities, and #3 among public US universities. Began in 2003, ARWU reviews over 1200 world-class universities using six objective indicators, including the number of Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, number of highly cited researchers, number of articles published in Nature and Science, number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index, and per capita performance of a university. The Chronicle of Higher Education wrote that ARWU "is considered the most influential international ranking".
