Graduate Math Minors

If you have already been admitted to another graduate program at the University of Minnesota, you may be interested in a Minor in Mathematics.

Master's Level Requirements

At the Master's level, two 5xxx-level or 8xxx-level mathematics courses (with a grade of "B" or better) usually fulfill the requirement. (A "B-" is too low to count.)

Ph.D. Level Requirements

At the Ph.D. level, four 5xxx-level or 8xxx-level mathematics courses (with a grade of "B" or better) usually fulfills the requirement. (A "B-" is too low to count.)

In both cases, the School of Mathematics, Director of Graduate Studies (DGS), must explicitly approve a proposed degree program form for minors in Mathematics.
We recommend that you tell the School of Mathematics, Director of Graduate Studies (DGS), in advance, which mathematics courses you intend to take, and get those courses approved. This can be done by email, and we recommend that you save the approval message.

Students using the Graduate Degree Plan (GDP) form: If your request has been approved, you may obtain the signature of the School of Mathematics DGS by bringing your Graduate Degree Plan form to the DGS Assistant in 127 Vincent Hall.

If your request has been approved, you may obtain the signature of the School of Mathematics DGS by bringing your Degree Program Form to the DGS Assistant in 127 Vincent Hall.

Students using the Graduate Planning & Audit System (GPAS): If your request has been approved, you may request to add the minor by following the instructions on this page.

If you are unsure if you are using the GDP or GPAS, please contact your major program or refer to the graduate degree completion information on the One Stop website.
