Seminars for the week of 30 January, 2012
Colloquium
Feb. 2, 2012, 3:30 p.m., in VinH 16Professor Luca Rondi
of University of Trieste, Italy
will speak on
Inverse problems and free-discontinuity problems Abstract:
We shall illustrate the link between free-discontinuity
problems and inverse problems whose unknowns may be characterized by discontinuous functions.
Many techniques developed for free-discontinuity problems, arising for example
in imaging or in fracture mechanics, may be successfully applied to
reconstruction methods for these kinds of inverse problems.
We focus on length penalization, such as in the Mumford and Shah
approach to segmentation, and on perimeter penalization as regularization terms, and on their phase-field counterparts for the numerical implementation.
We show the validity of this approach both from the theoretical point of view,
by a convergence analysis, and from the numerical point of view.
