Week of 31 October, 2011 Mathematics Seminars

Seminars for the week of 31 October, 2011

Colloquium

Nov. 3, 2011, 3:35 p.m., in vinH 16

Professor Zhiwei Yun
of MIT
will speak on
Motives and the inverse Galois problem

Abstract: We will use geometric Langlands theory to solve two problems almost simultaneously. One is Serre's question that whether there exist motives with motivic Galois group of type E_8 or G_2; the other is whether there are Galois extensions of Q with Galois groups E_8(p) or G_2(p) (the finite simple groups of Lie type). The answers to both questions are YES.
