Week of 3 October, 2011 Mathematics Seminars

Seminars for the week of 3 October, 2011

Colloquium

Oct. 6, 2011, 3:35 p.m., in vinH 16

Professor Vitali Milman
of Tel Aviv University
will speak on
The reasons behind some classical constructions in geometry and analysis

Abstract: The talk will be devoted to two goals: 1. To understand how some classical constructions in analysis (like the Fourier transform, the first and second derivatives, and some others) appear (uniquely) from elementary (and simplest) properties. 2. To build operations/algebraic relations which produce specific actions which are important and needed in analysis. (Say, T(a.b) = Ta+Tb should be a logarithm, but if T acts on all continuous or smooth functions, then log is not defined; so, what may substitute for such a map? Is it possible? The spirit of the talk leads to understanding that the typical constructions in analysis have, behind the scenes, some algebraic basis.
