will speak on
"(1) "Recent progress on symplectic embedding problems in four dimensions"
and
(2) "Subconvexity bounds for L-functions""

Abstract:(1) It is a nontrivial problem to decide whether one symplectic manifold can be symplectically embedded in another, even for simple examples such as convex subsets of R4. In 2010, Dusa McDuff established a number-theoretic criterion for when one four-dimensional symplectic ellipsoid can be symplectically embedded into another. We will review this result, and then introduce the general theory of ``ECH capacities''. The latter give general obstructions to symplectic embeddings in four dimensions, which turn out to be sharp for ellipsoid embeddings and a few other cases. However many mysteries remain in this area.

*and*

Abstract:(2) A fundamental problem in number theory is to bound L-functions on their critical lines. In general, only convexity bounds are known which are obtained by applying variations of the Phragmen-Lindeloff interpolation method. Although such bounds are far from the expectation created by the Riemann hypothesis, they barely fail to be of use in many applications. Any small power saving of the convexity bounds, i.e, the so-called subconvexity bounds, would have significant consequences in applications. These subconvexity problems have been solved for L-functions on GL(2), but are largely open for L-functions on higher rank groups. In this talk, we will explain how some novel techniques lead to our first subconvexity bounds for some L-functions on GL(3).
