School of Mathematics         Möbius Transformations Revealed is a short video by Douglas Arnold and Jonathan Rogness which depicts the beauty of Möbius transformations and shows how moving to a higher dimension reveals their essential unity.

Week of April 4, 2011 Mathematics Seminars

Seminars for the week of April 4, 2011

Colloquium

Tuesday, 3:30, in Vincent Hall 16

Professor Andre Joyal
of University of Quebec at Montreal
will speak on
"What is the Univalent Foundation of Mathematics by Voevodsky?"

Abstract:Vladimir Voevodsky is proposing a new foundation of mathematics based on Martin-Lof type theory augmented with a new axiom inspired by the homotopy theoretic interpretation of type theory. The goal is to incorporate directly into the foundation many features of homotopy theory and higher category theory and to be able to use a computer-assisted formal system for doing mathematics. I will describe the basic ideas of the Univalent Foundation project. I will briefly describe the history of the homotopy interpretation of type theory and the recent work. No knowledge of type theory is required.
