Seminars for the week of September 27, 2010

Colloquium

Thursday, 3:35, in VinH 16

Professor Mitchell Luskin
will speak on
"Development and analysis of atomistic-to-continuum coupling methods"

Many materials problems require the accuracy of atomistic modeling in small regions, such as the neighborhood of a crack tip. However, these localized defects typically interact through long ranged elastic fields with a much larger region that cannot be computed atomistically. Materials scientists have proposed many methods to compute solutions to these multiscale problems by coupling atomistic models near a localized defect with continuum models where the deformation is nearly uniform on the atomistic scale. During the past several years, a mathematical structure has been given to the description and formulation of atomistic-to-continuum coupling methods, and corresponding mathematical analysis has clarified the relation between the various methods and the sources of error. The development of coupling methods for crystalline materials that are reliable and accurate for configurations near the onset of lattice instabilities such as dislocation formation and movement has been particularly challenging. I will present theory and numerical experiments developed with Pavel Belik, Matthew Dobson, Xingjie Helen Li, Christoph Ortner, and Brian Van Koten to assess currently utilized methods and to propose more reliable, accurate, and efficient methods. 1
