"Some new characterizations of Sobolev spaces and related inequalities" In this talk, I will introduce some recent characterizations of Sobolev spaces. More precisely, let
$$
I_\delta := {\int_{\bf R}^3\int_{\bf R}^d\atop |g(x)-g(y)|>\delta}\ {\delta^p\over |x-y|^{d+p}}\ dxdy .
$$
I will show that $g\in W^{1,p}({\bf R}^d)(p>1)$ if and only if $g\in L^p({\bf R}^d)$ and
$\liminf_{\delta\to 0_+} I_\delta (g)< +\infty$. I also present variants of the Poincar\'e
inequality, the Sobolev inequality, and the Rellich-Kondrachov compactness theorem, where $\int_{{\bf R}^d}
|\nabla_g|^p$ is replaced by some quantity related to $I_\delta (g)$. The case $p = 1$, which is more
delicate, will be also discussed.
