Week of November 1, 2010 Mathematics Seminars

Seminars for the week of November 1, 2010

Colloquium

Thursday, 3:35, in VinH 16

Professor Jeff Adams
of University of Maryland
will speak on
"Computing the Unitary Dual"

The problem of computing the set of irreducible unitary representations of a Lie group goes back almost 100 years. The answer is only known in a small set of cases, including GL(n,R). While in principle there is a finite algorithm to compute the unitary dual for a given group, it is not at all clear this can be made explicit, not to mention implemented on a computer. The Atlas of Lie Groups and Representations is a project to carry out this computation, and to provide software for studying Lie groups and their representations. I will give an overview of the project. The project's web site is www.liegroups.org.
