Seminars for the week of May 3, 2010

Colloquium

Thursday, 3:35, in VinH 16

Professor Robert Gompf
of University of Texas, Austin
will speak on
"The 4-dimensional smooth Poincare conjecture"

The generalized Poincare' conjecture has now been settled in all dimensions, except for dimension 4 in the smooth category, where it remains as perhaps the last of the great classical problems of manifold topology. We will discuss the history of the problem, and recent developments that may call for reevaluating the likelihood that the conjecture is true.
