Seminars for the week of April 5, 2010
Colloquium
Thursday, 3:35, in VinH 16Professor Steve Zelditch
of Johns Hopkins and Northwestern Universities
will speak on
"Solution of the inverse spectral problem for analytic plane domains with a symmetry" Kac's famous problem, 'Can you hear the shape of a drum' asks whether you can determine a bounded plane domain
from the eigenvalues of its Dirichlet Laplacian. We prove that the answer is 'yes' for the class
of bounded analytic plane domains with an up-down symmetry: i.e. if we restrict the problem to this
class of domains, then you can hear the shape of the drum.
