Seminars for the week of April 26, 2010
Colloquium
Thursday, 3:35, in VinH 16Professor Ching-Li Chai
of University of Pennsylvania
will speak on
"Complex multiplication" An elliptic curve is said to have complex multiplication if its endomorphism
ring is an order of an imaginary quadratic eld. The arithmetic properties of such elliptic curves have been
studied since the nineteenth century. Fundamental work of Shimura and Taniyama in the late 1950's
to early 1960's extended the CM theory to higher dimension, which has since become a basic tool in
arithmetic algebraic tgeometry. The first part of this talk is a survey of the arithmetic and geometric aspects
of the theory of complex multiplication. The second part deals with more recent developments, on the CM lifting
problem (with B. Conrad and F. Oort) and a conditional answer (with F. Oort) to a question of N. Katz, on the
existence of an abelian variety over a number field which is not isogenous to the Jacobian of any smooth curve.
