Seminars for the week of April 7, 2008

Colloquium

Thursday, 3:20, in VinH 16

Professor Leila Schneps
of Universite de Paris 6, University of Pennsylvania
will speak on
"Multiple zeta values"

Multiple zeta values are the real numbers given by the series $$\zeta(k_1,k_2,\ldots,k_r)=\sum_{n_1>n_2>\cdots >n_r} {{1}\over{n_1^{k_1}\cdots n_r^{k_r}}$$ where the $k_i$ are positive integers, and the convergence of the series is guaranteed by the condition that $k_1>1$.  These values generalize the much-studied values of the Riemann zeta function of one variable. The multiple zeta values generate a Q-algebra.  They satisfy remarkable combinatorial algebraic relations, which are conjectured to generate all relations between them, which would make them into a set of essentially combinatorial algebraic objects.  However, at the same time, the structure of the collection of multiple zeta values seems to bear astonishing relationships with seemingly very different objects from number theory: the structure of the absolute Galois group of the rationals on the one hand, and spaces of modular forms on the other.  We will explore the status of and the evidence for these conjectural relations, some of which are much more approachable than others.
