Seminars for the week of March 5, 2007
Colloquium
Thursday, 3:20, in VinH 16Professor Weiyue Ding
of Peking University
will speak on
"Evolution of minimal tori in Riemannian manifolds" We propose an approach to finding minimal surfaces in Riemannian
manifolds by a new evolution equation which deforms not only the maps from the
surface into the target manifold but also the conformal structures on the
surface. The aim is to study what may happen when the surface is trying to
become minimal. In the simplest case of torus, it turns out that no
complicated singularities will appear; the only obstruction is the possible
blowing-up of bubbles, just as in the 2-D heat flow of harmonic maps.
Existence results for minimal tori can be established once we can exclude the
occurrence of bubbles.
