Seminars for the week of April 9, 2007

Colloquium

Thursday, 3:20, in VinH 16

Professor John Mallet-Paret
of Division of Applied Mathematics, Brown University
will speak on
"Qualitative and geometric dynamics of time-delay systems"

Differential equations which involve time-delays arise in various applications, and are the source of a rich and growing theory. A simple example of such an equation is $\dot x(t) = -x(t)+f(x(t-r))$ where $r\geq 0$ could be a constant, an explicit function $r=r(t)$ of time, or may be determined from the state as $r=r(x(t))$. Certainly more complicated examples occur. The qualitative and geometric approach of dynamical systems has proved particularly fruitful in studying such systems. Techniques involving invariant manifolds, degree theory, singular perturbations, and Floquet theory are employed although their adaptation to the delay setting can be highly nontrivial. In this lecture, we describe some recent advances in the theory, as well as open problems.
