Seminars for the week of April 2, 2007
Colloquium
Thursday, 3:20, in VinH 16Professor Ken Bromberg
of University of Utah
will speak on
"The geometry of hyperbolic 3-manifolds" The aim of this talk is to give a coarse description of the geometry
of a hyperbolic 3-manifold homotopy equivalent to a surface. We will begin by
addressing the same problem for a hyperbolic surface. For a surface we will
see that every compact hyperbolic surface can roughly be built from ideal
hyperbolic triangles with the building instructions coming from a
combinatorial object, a pants decomposition of the surface.
Suprisingly, a similar procedure works when we move to dimension three. Here
we will see that a hyperbolic 3-manifold homotopy equivalent to a surface can
be built from regular ideal octahedrons with the building instructions coming
from a path in the pants complex of the underlying surface.
This way of describing a hyperbolic 3-manifold is due to Minsky. The fact
that all hyperbolic 3-manifolds homotopy equivalent to a surface can arise
this way follows from the Brock-Canary-Minsky proof of the Ending Lamination
Conjecture. If time permits we will outline another approach to this
conjecture (joint with Brock, Evans and Souto) using hyperbolic cone-
manifolds.
