Seminars for the week of March 6, 2006

Colloquium

Thursday, 3:30, in VinH 16

Professor Juan Souto
of University of Chicago
will speak on
"Geometry of Heegaard splittings"

Heegaard splittings of 3-manifolds are decompositions into two handle bodies with disjoint interior. Such splittings can be obtained for example from Morse functions; in particular, every 3-manifold admits many Heegaard splittings. We will describe a certain relation between Heegaard splittings of 3-manifolds and rigid geometric objects as minimal surfaces. This allows on the one side to study Heegaard splittings from a geometric point of view and on the other side to study how the combinatorics of a given splitting influences the geometry of the manifold.
