Seminars for the week of January 30, 2006

Colloquium

Thursday, 3:30, in VinH 16

Professor Vladimir Markovic
of University of Warwick
will speak on
"Geometric realizations of mapping class groups and circle groups"

In this talk, I will describe the problem of lifting the mapping class group of a given manifold to the corresponding group of homeomorphisms and state some known applications to low dimensional topology (up to the dimension four). I will also talk about the analytical aspects of this problem. Various applications will be mentioned including the classification of transitive circle groups.
