Seminars for the week of September 5, 2005

Colloquium

Thursday, 3:30, in VinH 16

Professor Peter Webb
will speak on
"Weight theory for modular representations of finite groups"

In Lie theory (including representations of complex semisimple Lie algebras and representations of algebraic groups) we parametrize irreducible representations by `weights', these being l-dimensional representations of a smaller algebra or group. About 20 years ago it was conjectured by J. Alperin that a phenomenon with some similar features to this may hold for representations of all finite groups. I will introduce Alperin's weight conjecture (which remains unproven) and explain my recent work toward it.
