Seminars for the week of April 25, 2005

Colloquium

Thursday, 3:30, in VinH 16

Professor Alain Chenciner
of Universite Paris VII
will speak on
"Symmetries and “simple” solutions of the classical n-body problem"

The Lagrangian of the classical n-body problem has well known symmetries: isometries of the ambient Euclidean space and changes of scale coming from the homogeneity of the potential. To these symmetries are associated Keplerian-like solutions of the problem, the so-called homographic motions, well known in Minneapolis. Together with time translations and permutations of equal masses, these symmetries act on the set of loops of a given period in the configuration space, leaving the action functional invariant. Minimization of the action on well-chosen spaces of symmetric loops of a given period leads to remarkable periodic solutions of the n-body problem which are in a sense the simplest for which the shape does not stay constant. The main technical problem is understanding why collisions, also well known in Minneapolis, do not arise in minimizers under symmetry copnstraints, though they do arise very often under homological of homotopical constraints.
