Mathematics Seminars for the week of November 29, 2004

Colloquium

Thursday, 3:30, in VinH 16

Professor Vic Reiner
will speak on
"The critical group of a graph"

Since the work of Kirchoff in 1846 on electrical networks, it was known that the spanning trees in a graph (= node-edge network) are counted by a certain determinant. More recently people have looked at a finite abelian group, called the ``critical group'', whose order is this number of spanning trees. This group turns out to have many beautiful equivalent reformulations, which we will discuss. We will also discuss some of the few general results known relating the structure of the group to the structure of the graph, along with its analogy to the Picard group or Jacobian variety of a Riemann surface.
