Mathematics Seminars for the week of October 6, 2003

Colloquium

Thursday, 3:30, in VinH 16

Professor Irena Peeva
of Cornell University
will speak on
"Hilbert schemes"

The Hilbert function is an invariant which measures the size of a graded ideal in a polynomial ring: in particular, it gives the dimension and the multiplicity of the variety defined by a prime ideal. The Hilbert scheme (introduced by Grothendieck) parameterizes ideals with a fixed Hilbert function. This talk will discuss properties of Hilbert schemes.
