Mathematics Seminars for the week of April 28, 2003

Colloquium

Thursday, 3:30, in VinH 16

Professor V. Srinivas
of Tata Institute, Bombay
will speak on
"Zero cycles on surfaces"

The Chow group of 0-cycles on an algebra variety is one possible generalization of the divisor class group of an algebraic curve. I'll first review the theory of the class group of a curve, then discuss similarities and differences in the theory for surfaces, including the infinite dimensionality theorem of Mumford, and the torsion theorem of Roitman. I'll also discuss conjectures of Bloch, and of Bloch and Beilinson, which are the major open questions in the area. Finally I'll discuss some recent joint work with A. Krishna, giving some progress towards these conjectures for normal surfaces
