Generalizing partitions and standard tableaux

The irreducible representations of the symmetric group are indexed by partitions and bases of these representations are indexed by standard tableaux. The representation theory of the affine Hecke algebras provides a generalization of partitions and standard tableaux. I will explain these combinatorial indexings and how they arise.
