Surface diagrams are a new way to specify any smooth, closed oriented four-manifold using an orientable surface decorated by simple closed curves. 
The goal of this talk is to give a uniqueness theorem for these objects that resembles the Reidemeister-Singer theorem for Heegaard splittings of three-manifolds.
