Linux, Macintosh and Windows support text input for many writing systems.
Specific instructions may change between OS releases, so you may have to explore a bit to find how to change the input method on releases of Linux, Mac OS X, or Windows.
Changing the Input Method in Linux
The steps for setting the input method has changed in the past few releases of Fedora Linux, and it's also different in other linux distributions like Ubuntu.
- Open the Input Method settings by going to the menu in the top of the desktop.
System > Preferences > Personal > Input Method
- The input method configuration window should now be open.
The default setting follows the system-wide configuration.
To use text input methods beyond english, set the input method to Use custom input method "scim".
Using a custom method lets individuals set what language systems they want to type in.
- Log out, and log back in.
- An SCIM applet should appear in the top right of the desktop panel, and looks like a small dark gray folder.
Right click on it and click on the SCIM Setup menu.
- The SCIM Input Method Setup window should open. In the left window pane select IMEngine > Global Setup.
- The right pane should show a list of available input methods: English, Korean, Chinese traditional, Chinese simplified, etc. Check the input methods you want to use. If you want to use an input method that isn't listed, contact Systems Staff.
- The left panel entry FrontEnd > Global Setup configures the hotkeys to change input methods.
Some software (like the GIMP photo editor, or the Emacs text editor) use Control+space for their own shortcut, so frequent users of those packages may want to use a different hotkey for the keyboard input method trigger.
- Click OK to accept the changes and close the SCIM Input Method Setup window.
- Bring the mouse pointer over the SCIM input method applet in the panel at the top right of the desktop. Left-click on the SCIM applet, and you should see a list of available input methods.
Click on the input method you want to type in.
- To switch between the default input method and an SCIM input method, use Control+Space.
Mac OS X International Keyboard Layouts, Input Methods and Palettes.
- To enable different keyboard sets on Mac OS X, start the control panel. You can start it from the Apple menu in the top left of the screen, and selecting the System Prefenences... menu entry.
- Click the International icon in the top row of available preferences.
- Select the "Input Method" tab, and enable any keyboard layouts, input methods, or palettes you plan on using.
A flag icon should appear in the upper right of the screen, and can be used to change to a different keyboard set. An onscreen keyboard is also available.
- The keyboard shortcut for changing input methods is Control+Space, but Apple also uses that shortcut for the Spotlight desktop search tool.
Click the Keyboard Shortcuts... button to change the input source shortcut to something like Control+Shift-Space.
Windows Language Options
Windows has similar "Regional and Language Options" in it's control panel, and uses a "language bar" to toggle keyboard sets.
