Math Program Ranks #12 in ARWU
The U of M Twin Cities mathematics program was ranked #12 in the world in the latest Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). The University of Minnesota as a whole ranked #28.

Kathrin Bringmann Awarded Ramanujan Prize
Assistant Professor Kathrin Bringmann has been awarded the 2009 SASTRA Ramanujan Prize, which will be awarded in December at SASTRA University in Kumbakonam, India, Ramanujan's hometown.

Marta Lewicka Gets NSF CAREER Grant
Assistant Professor Marta Lewicka has been awarded a five year Career grant award from NSF.
The Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program represents "...the National Science Foundation's most prestigious awards in support of junior faculty who exemplify the role of teacher-scholars through outstanding research, excellent education and the integration of education and research within the context of the mission of their organizations."
Marta's research area is analysis and applications of partial differential equations.

Leon Green Passed Away
Emeritus Professor Leon Green has passed away in Minneapolis.
Leon came to the University of Minnesota in 1953, was promoted to full professor in 1963, and retired in 1998.
Leon's research speciality was differential geometry, and he helped build and mentor our active research group in this important area of mathematics.
He will be missed by his colleagues, students, friends and family.

Distance Learning Coming for Financial Mathematics Program
Starting in the 2010-2011 academic year, the Master of Financial Mathematics (MFM) program will be making four of its courses available through distance learning.

Kathrin Bringmann Awarded Krupp Prize
Assistant Professor Kathrin Bringmann has been awarded the prestigious Krupp Prize for Young Professors.
The one million Euro prize, for a five-year period, is awarded by the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach Foundation.
Kathrin's research area is in number theory and combinatorics, and she is the third mathematician to win the annual prize since its inception in 1986.

Edgar Reich Passed Away
Emeritus Professor Edgar Reich has passed away in Minneapolis.
Edgar arrived in Minnesota in 1956, was promoted to full professor in 1961, and retired from the University in 2000. He served as Head of the department from 1969 to 1971.
Edgar was recognized worldwide for his deep and influential research contributions, particularly in the field of quasiconformal mappings. He will be missed by his colleagues, students, friends and family.

Igor Pak Moves to UCLA
Associate Professor Igor Pak has resigned his position at the University of Minnesota to accept a professorship at UCLA.
Igor's research area is in combinatorics and discrete mathematics.
The Department wishes Igor the best of luck in this new stage of his career.

Marian Pour-El Passed Away
Emeritus Professor Marian Pour-El has passed away in Iowa.
Marian came to the University of Minnesota in 1964, was promoted to full professor in 1968, and retired in 2000.
Marian was an internationally acclaimed, innovative researcher in the field of logic, specializing in computability.
She will be missed by her colleagues, students, friends and family.

Assistant Professor Duane Nykamp was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure.
Duane's research area is mathematical neuroscience.
