EDUCATION AND RESEARCH
The
Minnesota Center for Industrial
Mathematics (MCIM), a center within
the School of Mathematics, was established
in 1994 and is responsible for educational
and research programs in industrial
mathematics. The center Director
is Maria Carme Calderer. Collaborating
on research, the Center faculty
and students work with industry
and business to provide solutions
to relevant problems through the
use of mathematics.
The Ph.D. program in Mathematics
at the University of Minnesota is
ranked 14th in the nation in the
most recent National Research Council
Report. Through advisement
and participation in industrial
activities of the center, and through
internships, the center enhances
the education of mathematics graduate
students. By being involved in the
center's programs, students acquire
not only the best mathematical education,
but also important skills such as
communication, teamwork, and presentation
through problem-solving experience
in industrial settings. The scope
of the students' training is broad
and interdisciplinary. We prepare
our students for careers in industry,
business, and higher education.
The center is responsible for administering
the MS degree in Mathematics with
Emphasis in Industrial and Applied
Mathematics. Well-prepared students
entering with a Bachelor's degree
can expect to finish the M.S. program
in 2 years (or less). Details about
the MS and PhD programs offered
by the School of Mathematics can
be found at the School's Graduate Program page. Financial aid
in the form of fellowship, teaching
assistantship and research assistantship
are available for qualified students
on a competitive basis.
INDUSTRY AND INTERNSHIP
Students
work as interns under the guidance
of industry mentors at top corporate
research facilities around the country.
Both M.S. and Ph.D. thesis topics
are often identified through these
internships. For Ph.D. students,
further on-site industry collaboration
may follow the initial internship.
Go to our Internship
page to see past internship assignments
and their corresponding theses.
Collaborative
research with industry and business,
through their participation in the
internship program, serves two purposes.
The Center provides industry with
(1) the resources, in the form of
a graduate student with faculty
supervision, to carry out the research,
and (2) a talented pool of students
with the proper background for possible
future recruitment. Go to our Industry
page to learn more about the many
leading industrial corporations
that have partnered with MCIM.
