Polytopes are generalizations of polygons to larger dimensions. Alternating sign matrices are generalizations of permutation matrices. In this talk we define and study the polytope whose vertices are the alternating sign matrices and compare it to the polytope whose vertices are the permutation matrices (the Birkhoff polytope). Since this talk begins with the definitions, it should be accessible to all.
Note: This talk should perhaps be subtitled "how to turn a class project into part of your thesis" so if you're interested in the topic or in the story of how this research came about, I hope you'll come.
