Consider symmetric a elliptic partial differential equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions defined on a symmetric domain. Is it true that solutions posses the same symmetry? What can be said in the parabolic case? We approach this problem using the maximum principle and the method of moving hyperplanes.
We also discuss various modifications and generalizations of these methods. The talk should be accessible to all graduate students without previous background in partial differential equations.
