Application Fees

The Mathematics Department does not make an offer for graduate study in Mathematics until the Graduate School receives its application fee, $55 for domestic students, $75 for international students.

The School of Mathematics itself does not charge an application fee. The fee should be sent to the Graduate School directly.

For international students for whom the Graduate School application fee is infeasible:

  • If the part of your application coming to the School of Mathematics is complete (including letters of recommendation, informal transcript, statement of purpose, TOEFL, and GRE Mathematics Subject test) by January 15, 2006,
  • if your computer-based TOEFL score is at least 258 (620 for paper-based, 105 for internet-based) and
  • if your GRE Mathematics Subject score is in the 95th percentile or above,
then we may try to pay your application fee to the Graduate School if funds are available, but you must write requesting this. Do not assume that, if you meet the criteria above, the fee is automatically paid.

Final decisions about covering this fee will be made by 22 January. (If you are waiting to hear about a fee decision, then the Math Department deadline is still 15 January, but we will allow a delay of the Grad School deadline until 23 January.) Before asking whether we can cover the fee for you, please check (by writing to Ms. Diane Trager, at trager@math.umn.edu) to make sure that your department application is complete. (Until it is, we cannot consider paying the fee.) Also be sure to complete all parts of your Graduate School application, except for paying the fee and officially submitting the application. After all of this is completed, between 10 January and 15 January, please write to gradprog@math.umn.edu and ask if we are able to cover the fee.

Please note that we do not have the ability to waive the fee, and that it is assessed by our Graduate School, not by our department. All we can do is to pay your fee for you, out of department funds.
