The Twin Cities and the surrounding state of Minnesota has an active
finance and insurance industry, and the Bureau of Economic Analysis has
numerical indicators that demonstrate this quantitatively.
There are many insurance companies with a strong presence here. One
also finds much banking, and quite a number of small hedge funds.
Since 1881, the Minneapolis Grain Exchange
has been one of the primary grain exchanges in the US, first as a cash market, then futures and
options. All this, and our proximity to Chicago ensures that our
graduates will have many local job opportunities.

A propos of the local focus on finance, Minnesota's Industry
Specialization Index (ISI) for "Finance and insurance" is 126. A
100 would mean that we have about as much "Finance and insurance'' as
the US as a whole. A 125 our numbers are 1.25 times what you would
expect given the size of the Minnesota economy. So we have a
documented specialization in this area.
One can request ISI numbers from the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA)
website's

In the GSP map make the following selections:
- in "Industry", select "Finance and insurance"
(which is 2/3 of the way down the pull down menu)
- in "Statistic", leave "GSP: current-dollar"
- in "Unit of Measure", select "Industry specialization index"
- in "Year" use "2005",
and then click on "Draw".
Note that MN is 125, in the table at the bottom. Only seven states
have a higher number, and two of those (Iowa and South Dakota)
border Minnesota. IL is 118, less than Minnesota.
It is also possible to request this information broken down by
Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). The bottom line is that, in raw
dollars (not ISI), in "Finance and insurance", our MSA is fully one
third the size of Chicago's. This is, in fact, surprisingly large,
as Chicago is one of the main financial centers in the US.
